Santa Monica, California
Getting help for your dog in Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a dense beach city on the western edge of Los Angeles County, about 14 miles from downtown LA, and most residents rent apartments rather than own houses. Parking is tight, many buildings have shared garages or no elevator, and traffic can be slow. When you ask for pet aftercare, give your building details, floor, elevator access and parking, so a collection can be arranged around the realities of your street.
The beach, the palisades above the ocean and the city's many parks are part of how Santa Monica residents live with their pets. The fires in the neighboring Pacific Palisades in early 2025 also touched many local families, and some lost pets or homes. Whatever your situation, private cremation with the ashes returned gives you time to decide on a memorial, whether at home or somewhere by the sea.
Small-town vets around Santa Monica sometimes offer one inclusive price that covers euthanasia, holding your dog, the drive to a crematory, often in a bigger town like Los Angeles, and bringing the urn back to you. That can be simple and fair. Just ask to see the parts listed separately, so you know what the cremation itself costs and whether "private" really means your dog is cremated on their own.
About 90,082 people live in Santa Monica, which makes it the 84th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Santa Monica are based about 14 miles away in Los Angeles, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Culver City (5 miles), Beverly Hills (6 miles) and West Hollywood (8 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Santa Monica too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Burial, cremation and tradition in California
In California, about 70.5%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and competitive, which is good news if you want to compare prices or need a witnessed cremation at short notice.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Santa Monica, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for aftercare in Santa Monica
Because Santa Monica rarely gets very hot or very cold, you have a little more time after a death at home than families in harsher climates. That's a chance to let relatives come and say goodbye, including children and other pets. Keep your dog on a towel in a cool room, away from sunny windows and heating vents, and aim for collection within a day.
In Santa Monica's mild weather, burying ashes or planting a memorial tree can happen in almost any month, which is a quiet advantage. Nurseries stock trees and shrubs most of the year and the soil is usually workable. If you'd like to plant, ask a local nursery what suits your yard, and mix only a small portion of the ashes into the planting soil: in large amounts they're alkaline and salty, which young roots dislike.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Most Santa Monica families pay somewhere in the ranges below. A private cremation for a medium-size dog usually lands in the low hundreds; communal is roughly half. Home euthanasia, if you want it, is a separate cost: about $410[5] on average nationally, compared with $139[6] in a clinic.
By our estimate Santa Monica families would spend around $0.4 million a year if every one of the roughly 1,500 dogs lost here were privately cremated at $260[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

What California allows: burial, scattering and more
Public land adds its own layer. Parks, beaches, lakes and forests in California are run by different agencies, and each may take its own view on scattering ashes. Many allow it quietly and discreetly, some want a request made in advance, and a few don't allow it at all. If you have a special place in mind, a quick call or a look at the managing agency's website before the day saves an awkward surprise.

For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Santa Monica can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your dog dies at night, there's no reason to phone anyone before morning unless it would help you. Carry your dog somewhere cool and lay a sheet over them.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Santa Monica. Tell them your dog's approximate weight and where they are.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers the pickup, whichever cremation type you've chosen and the container the ashes arrive in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Keeping your dog close
Santa Monica's ocean breeze keeps the climate mild all year, with August highs around 79F and February lows near 51F, and the marine layer often keeps early summer gray and cool. That gives you slightly more time than inland, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: wrap it in a towel, add ice packs and keep it in a shaded room. On rare heat-wave days, act more quickly.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many dogs die in Santa Monica each year?
Our estimate is around 1,500. It comes from Santa Monica's population (about 90,082), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog (about 19,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Santa Monica?
Usually yes. Culver City is about 5 miles away, Beverly Hills is about 6 miles away and West Hollywood is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[3] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Santa Monica follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Santa Monica actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Los Angeles, about 14 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Santa Monica and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Who should I tell after my dog dies in Santa Monica?
Start with your vet, so reminders stop and their records are closed. Then contact your microchip registry, your pet insurer if you have one and, if your dog was licensed or registered, the local office that issued it. Groomers, walkers and daycare will appreciate a short message too. Doing it all in one sitting spares you painful reminders arriving weeks later.
How many families in Santa Monica choose cremation for their dog?
Nobody counts this city by city, but we can estimate it. By our estimate, Santa Monica has about 19,000 dog-owning households and loses roughly 1,500 dogs a year. Research from both sides of the Atlantic suggests about two in three bereaved owners choose cremation[8], so a large share of those families will be arranging one. Treat it as a rough guide rather than a local count.
