Ventura, California
Where to start in Ventura
Some Ventura families think of the coast when deciding what to do with ashes, from the pier and the promenade to the river mouth and the view out to the Channel Islands. State beaches, city parks and the harbour each have their own rules, so check before scattering anything. Plenty of people keep the ashes at home for a season first; there is no deadline, and the decision often becomes clearer with time.
Ventura's climate is shaped by the Pacific: mild, often foggy mornings, pleasant afternoons and few really hot days, though the Santa Ana winds can bring sudden heat and fire danger in autumn and winter. The Thomas Fire in December 2017 burned into the hillside neighbourhoods, and many residents keep a go-bag for their pets. After a death, keep your pet cool and arrange cremation within a day or two.
Suburban yards around Ventura tempt many families to bury their dog at home, but check first. City ordinances, homeowners' associations and buried utility lines can all rule out a backyard grave, and a large dog needs a surprisingly big hole. If you're unsure, cremation now and a small burial of the urn later gives you the garden spot without the heavy digging or the rule-checking.
Ventura is home to about 110,000 people, the 58th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ventura are based about 40 miles away in Santa Clarita, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Oxnard (6 miles), Moorpark (20 miles) and Thousand Oaks (23 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
23,500
Ventura: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
110,000 ÷ 2.5 = 44,000 households; × 53% (dog) = 23,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,850
dog deaths per year in Ventura, our estimate
How we calculated this
23,500 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 1,850 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
70.5%[3]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
$260[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

Cremation in California, and what it means for dog owners
In California, with cremation chosen for around 70.5%[3] of people, pet crematories often compete on service rather than basics. You might be offered a farewell room, same-week return or a range of containers. Take what helps and skip what doesn't. The core promise to confirm is simple: your dog is cremated individually, carries an ID tag from pickup to return, and you're given a date when the ashes will be ready.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ventura tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your dog's aftercare in Ventura's climate
If you're caring for an elderly or ill dog in Ventura, it's worth thinking about the weather ahead. Summer heat can make breathing harder for older dogs, and icy or stormy spells can make it difficult to reach a vet quickly. Ask your vet whether home visits are possible in bad weather, and save the number of the nearest out-of-hours clinic now, so you're not searching for it at a difficult moment.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Where you live in the US moves the price. In-home euthanasia for a dog averages $364 in Texas but $572 in Massachusetts[5], and pet care spending runs well above average in some metros and below it in others. In Ventura, use the weight-based ranges below as a guide, and ask local providers for a written total rather than relying on a national average.
Put another way: around 1,850 dogs die in Ventura each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages $260[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.5 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in California
Renters and homeowners in California face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what California allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ventura.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Ventura may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Get help lifting. A large dog needs two people, and a blanket or sheet used as a sling makes it easier and gentler.
- Move your dog to a cool spot near the door, on a waterproof sheet with a blanket over the top.
- Call a provider that can handle a big dog and tell them roughly what your dog weighs, how many stairs there are and whether any corners are awkward.
- Ask whether they'll bring a stretcher and two people, and whether there's a surcharge for heavier dogs.
- Confirm private or communal and the full price, including the urn, which will need to be larger for a big dog.
- Take your keepsakes now: a snip of fur, a nose print or a paw impression.
Keeping your dog close
Ventura, officially San Buenaventura, is the seat of Ventura County and stretches from the historic mission downtown along the beaches to newer neighbourhoods on the east side. Many homes are older bungalows or ranch houses with small yards, while the hillside streets above downtown are steep and narrow. Tell a provider about stairs, parking and slopes if you need collection from home.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[3] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ventura follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Ventura actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Santa Clarita, about 40 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ventura and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ventura?
The closest communities we cover are Oxnard (about 6 miles), Moorpark (about 20 miles) and Thousand Oaks (about 23 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ventura too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Ventura big enough to have several dog aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 23,500 Ventura households keep a dog and around 1,850 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 110,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How far ahead should I book a home euthanasia in Ventura?
Give as much notice as you can, ideally several days. In-home vets in a city like Ventura cover wide areas, and evening and weekend slots go first. If your dog is declining quickly, call anyway; many keep a little room for urgent visits, and your regular vet may be able to help. When you book, ask whether the vet arranges the cremation afterwards or whether you need to call a crematory yourself.
Can someone collect my dog from home in Ventura?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Ventura offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Tell them your dog's approximate weight, whether there are stairs or a lift, and the best time to come, so they can send the right number of people.
