What Japan allows: burial, scattering and more
Renters and homeowners in Japan face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what Japan allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your dog dies at night, there's no reason to phone anyone before morning unless it would help you. Carry your dog somewhere cool and lay a sheet over them.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Saitama. Tell them your dog's approximate weight and where they are.
