Cremation in England, and what it means for dog owners
Cremation is the norm in England: about 83.0%[3] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity carries over to pets. Most people here already know what a private cremation is, local crematories are well established and families rarely feel they have to explain why they want their dog's ashes home.
That England rate is a human one, published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). We quote it for Bath only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

What's allowed in England after your dog dies
Public land adds its own layer. Parks, beaches, lakes and forests in England are run by different agencies, and each may take its own view on scattering ashes. Many allow it quietly and discreetly, some want a request made in advance, and a few don't allow it at all. If you have a special place in mind, a quick call or a look at the managing agency's website before the day saves an awkward surprise.
In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so it's reasonable to ask for a price list. You can also contact an independent pet crematorium directly; many publish prices online and collect from home.
Start with the England rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Bath's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Step by step in Bath
- Take a breath. There is no clock running on the first hour. When a dog dies at home, settle them onto a towel somewhere cool and, if you're able, gently close their eyes.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.

Much of Bath lives in Georgian terraces and crescents split into flats, on steep streets where parking is hard. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bath?

Should my other dog see the body before collection?
Many owners let their other dogs sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes, and it does no harm. Some dogs show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep routines steady, with the usual walks and mealtimes. If your remaining dog seems withdrawn or off their food for more than a couple of weeks, mention it to your vet.
